“The sound of light whispering through the tree leaves above you”
The Toledo Museum of Art, Glass Pavilion / Toledo, Ohio / Fall 2024
September 14th to October 28th
Curated by Kelli Fisher
Using a paravent, or folding screen, Tijerina uses subtle etchings on the glass’s surface to engage notions of time, nature, and place. Each glass panel has etched replicas of local plants found in Monterrey, Mexico; Montreal, Canada; and Toledo, Ohio. As the sun’s light moves across the work, the shadows of these regional plants come together against the architecture of the Glass Pavilion-thus, time and place are condensed and folded into a singular moment. As each moment becomes the next, and the sun’s arc continues accross the sky, we create memories shaped by the environment around us. The rigidity of glass, with the ever-changing movement of light across its surface, allows our memories to form and fade as time continues forward.
